Adventure! SP Jain Jaguars

Classes and Agendas

Sometimes with all the exciting things to do at S P Jain, it's hard to remember the real reason that you came, namely to STUDY and LEARN . Nevertheless, this is a serious college, where are are expected to work very hard. How else are you going to become a global business leader?

Business English writing class -- interactive learning at its best

Classes -- In your freshman and sophomore (1st and 2nd) years, everybody takes the same classes. You usually have two classes every day, five days a week (Mon - Fri in SG and SYD, Sun - Thurs in DBX, which honors Friday as the Moslem holy day). You take five classes each semester. Each class meets twice a week, and is 90 minutes long. You have half an hour off between classes. In Singapore, classes run from 9:30 to 11:00 am, and then again from 11:30 to 1:00 pm.  Schedules are similar in the other campuses, although in Sydney you will have either morning or afternoon classes, depending on your specialization / major.

Divisions -- To keep classes small (less than 40, and often much smaller), each cohort is divided into several divisions. You go to all classes with your division. This makes for closeness between students, and enables a lot of group project work.

Course Topics -- Freshmen and sophomores take a broad spectrum of classes, much like in a liberal arts college in the US. The goal is to give you a broad background, so that you will truly be a global citizen. Freshmen typically study topics like world culture, economics, business mathematics, business English writing, business oral communications, computer skills, sustainability & corporate social responsibility, and statistics. Sophomores study critical thinking, decision science, organizational behavior, marketing, accounting and finance. (Sometimes these subjects are offered in different order.) Juniors and seniors (3rd and 4th year students) specialize in either finance or marketing. In addition to their major, some students also choose to do a minor, taking half of the courses required for a major in the other specialization.

Interactivity -- S P Jain professors are carefully selected for the ability to lead engaging, interactive classes, where students participate in their own learning process. Lectures are kept to a minimum. Instead, students engage in classroom discussions, debates, activities, independent research and case studies. They also do a lot of group projects, learning important teamwork skills that will help them in their careers.

Languages -- All classes at S P Jain are conducted in English. All students entering the BBA are expected to demonstrate mastery in both written and spoken English. Students often have an opportunity to study another language at various campuses (Mandarin in Singapore, for instance), but this is not part of the college curriculum.

Project Class -- The whole point of living in three different countries is to experience the business culture there. So Jaguars do a semester-long regional research project in each of the three cities, where they learn about industries and markets unique to either Singapore, Dubai or Australia. They actually go out into the business community and meet with its leaders, gaining insights into real-world conditions and challenges. Some of the projects go so well that students are offered jobs or internships at the businesses they study.
