Eight months ago when I told my friends and family that I was going to Singapore to study, everyone looked at me like I was mad. They were all wondering what on earth could have possessed me to fly 18,000km from home to study.
I’ve always been the fun-loving and adventurous kind and becoming a Jag was my biggest risk. For me, S P Jain has been an interesting experience. One of my friends Ujjwal said “It hasn’t been a rollercoaster. It’s been a bloody theme park.”
Your first year courses won’t be that difficult, it’s a pretty moderate workload that gives you plenty of time to go out and explore Singapore. The professors are great and they’re very friendly. One of the perks here is that it’s very easy to meet up with your Prof and have a quick chat or even go for lunch with them. They’re on your side. Make friends with Denise Adversalo. She is the BBA program coordinator and basically your lifeline here. She makes everything easier and she’s just the one who keeps us all sane.
You don’t want to look back at life and say “I wish I did that.” So, you need to enjoy Singapore. You’re not only here for school. Live up every Ladies Night in Clarke Quay and weekends at Sentosa. Take trips over the breaks. My girls and I went to Kuala Lumpur and Penang in Malaysia. People went to Bali for midterm and Cambodia and Thailand at the end of the semester. My motto has always been “Work hard, party harder” and that’s what you’ve got to do when you’re here. Eight months in Singapore really flies by.
I think one of the most important things I got from this year was a great deal of independence, self-reliance and responsibility. Moving to a new city changes you. It really opens your eyes to the new cultures and all the people around you. You’ll meet some really great people here and soon you will find yourself looking at maps and marking your friends’ countries and being ready to take on the world. S P Jain was a big leap for me, but I don’t regret this choice and I’m excited for 2nd year in Dubai.
