A Humble Journey into Data Science

Written by Luan Tran | Jan 10, 2025 7:58:47 AM

My story with data science begins with a simple love for maths and coding. I started coding during high school and had already grasped some fundamentals before deciding on my career path. The turning point came when I attended a conference in Vietnam discussing the potential of AI. It was there that my passion for data was ignited, and I realised the incredible impact this field could have on the world. Choosing to study data science at SP Jain Global felt like the natural next step to turn this passion into a profession.

A Balanced Approach to Learning Data Science

Being on the Dean’s List for four consecutive semesters of the BDS program has been a rewarding experience. If I had to share one tip about studying, it would be this: "work smarter, not harder". For me, it’s all about really understanding the concepts first. I like to ask myself questions, challenge my thinking, and keep in mind that I’m studying for myself, not just to pass an exam. This approach keeps me curious and genuinely interested in what I’m learning.

I usually start by reading the books my professors recommend, working through all the practice questions, and digging into why the solutions work—not just what they are. It’s not just about solving problems but figuring out the logic behind them. That way, I can tackle not only similar problems but also totally new ones. Talking things over with classmates is another big part of my learning process. Getting different perspectives helps me see things in new ways and makes the whole experience more engaging. These habits have helped me build a solid foundation and stay excited about what I’m studying.

My Data Science Internship at SKwill AI

During last summer, I was fortunate enough to intern at Skwill AI in Sydney. It was an incredible opportunity where I was entrusted with leading a team for a small project to extend a function of their AI assistant chatbot. This marked my first experience working on a real-world project and collaborating with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The project involved designing an interface that could provide detailed insights from the company’s data. While it was challenging, the experience was invaluable. I learned how to navigate technical obstacles, communicate effectively with a team, and adapt to fast-paced changes. Even though the final product had room for improvement, it received positive feedback from the company. This experience not only boosted my technical and interpersonal skills but also deepened my understanding of applying AI solutions in practical scenarios.

Preparing for a New Frontier in the BDS Program

Currently, I’m working on my capstone project with my fellow students at SP Jain Global. Although it’s still in its early stages, I can share that we are exploring genetic analysis of biodiversity across suburbs in New South Wales. Our goal is to build an AI model that predicts the compatibility of different species for purposes like ecosystem restoration or urban planning.

Having prior experience with developing an AI assistant during my internship, combined with the expertise of my incredible team and support from our sponsor, gives me confidence that we can propel this project forward. While the road ahead is challenging, it’s also filled with exciting possibilities.

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on this journey, I feel immense gratitude for the people and opportunities that have shaped my path. From discovering my passion for data science to working on impactful projects, every step has been a lesson in growth and resilience. Challenges have taught me to adapt, and successes have fuelled my drive to make a difference.

As I look to the future, I’m eager to continue exploring the possibilities of data science, contributing to solutions that make a meaningful impact. For those pursuing their own paths, my advice is simple: stay curious, embrace the challenges, and trust the journey. Growth doesn’t just come from reaching your goals but from the experiences along the way.
