The first time I heard about SP Jain was five days before the deadline to apply for the BBA program. I was at home in Algeria, and saw the program on Facebook on the advertisement section found on the right of the homepage. I was just scrolling up and down and suddenly, I came across their exciting tri-city BBA program.

As a kid, everyone has dreams like becoming a pilot, a doctor, a professional athlete or astronaut. Mine was an unusual one. I wanted to become an entrepreneur. As a matter of fact, I still have the same dream—running my own enterprise someday and being my own boss. In high school, I would study hard in order to get into a good college so that I can fulfill this dream of mine. Finally, I ended up in S P Jain and they were generous enough to grant me a full scholarship thanks to my outstanding high school performance.

Many years ago, I was a small boy who questioned everything about his life. I had big dreams and I always wondered how I would achieve them. Being in a little village in Cameroon (Africa) with my grandmother, I could only listen to the radio because that was all we had. I always dreamt of being a high-ranked personality in public service or a business mogul. I had no idea on how I could achieve this until I went to high school.

During the first semester I keep a detailed account of everything I spent – literarily everything. At the end of each day I would record all spending for the day on a excel spreadsheet; I even organized the day-to-day expenditures into categories such as food, phone, travel, textbooks, durable items, recreation etc. This made me completely aware of what I was spending, and where.

Want to see something kind of amazing? Okay, here’s an ordinary American kid, out deep-frying a turkey for Thanksgiving at his brother’s condo near Seattle. It’s embarrasing to admit it, but that was me a couple of years ago, when I had never heard of Singapore or Dubai, and wasn’t even sure if Sydney was in Canada or Australia. I was working at Best Buy, and pretty much going nowhere in life.

Getting around is really easy in Singapore, and pretty easy in S P Jain's other two cities.

Singapore -- The hostel (dormitory) is right upstairs from the classrooms. You jump in the lift (elevator), and you're there. Most students share a room with one, two, or sometimes three other students. You get a bed, desk, chair, small closet with drawers, sheets, and comforter (but no towel -- remember to bring one or two!). It's clean, and has everything you need, but it's not exactly spacious. The bathroom is down the hall, which you share with other residents. Males and females live on separate floors, and do not share bathrooms. There is are washers and dryers for doing laundry. They take tokens, which you can get from the front desk. Many students buy drying racks to air-dry their clothes, especially Indian cottons which shrink in dryers. Each dorm room has its own air conditioner, and a window to the outside.

If you’re looking for world-class college sports teams, where you could get recruited to be a professional football or basketball player, forget S P Jain. After all, this is a business school, and a small one at that. But if you love to play sports for fun, and you value staying fit, you’ll find plenty to keep you happy at S P Jain.

Fun Oh my gosh. Where to start? Just for starters, Jaguars have: gone bicycling on a jungle island, organized a big fun run, backpacked through Vietnam and Laos, gone to Ferrari World, barbecued with faculty on the beach, had a prom (dance), held a beauty contest, conducted a Model United Nations, competed in Tarang (multi-university Indian student event), gone museum hopping in Singapore, surfed and gone sailing in Sydney, published their own magazine, held ping-pong competitions, organized a philosophy club, held numerous performance nights, held Dynamic Africa day-long event, built houses for the homeless in Cambodia, vacationed together in Bali, Bintan Island, Thailand and Malaysia, published their Harlem Shake

Jobs Many Jags choose to get part-time jobs in Singapore and Sydney to help pay for college. The Singapore government gives special permission to foreign students at certain colleges (including S P Jain) to work 16 hours a week when classes are in session, and 40 hours a week during breaks. In Australia, it’s 20 hours during classes and 40 hours otherwise. Foreign students in Dubai are not allowed to work.
